Soccer Explains the World

by Lindsey Levinsohn

Forgive me for having a different mind set about soccer… I’m sorry, football as it is called in most of the world. To me, football consists of helmeted guys throwing around a pig skin and trying to score a touchdown, but to the rest of the world it is kicking a black and white ball into a net. It seems that everyone in the world, with the exception of the United States, is mad about football. It has become more than a pastime, but rather a way of life.

No matter what is taking place on the political, social, or economical fronts, every four years differences are set aside and the world comes together to compete in the FIFA World Cup.

This year the tournament will take place from June 11 to July 11 and for the first time will be hosted by an African nation. South Africa has taken on the job of hosting this premier sporting event in which 32 teams from around the world will participate and several million fans are expected to show up. Whether you are going to the event or watching it from the comfort of your own home, here are few eBooks and audiobooks about the world’s favorite activity.

While I will probably never make it to an actual World Cup event, I would like to imagine that it is comparable to the Quidditch World cup just without broomsticks and bludgers. If only I could root for Hogwarts in this World Cup.
